Гражданская Оборона (Grazhdanskaya Oborona, translated as Civil Defence; often abbreviated as GO or GrOb) was a cult Russian punk rock/noise rock band, founded in mid-80’s by Yegor Letov (guitar, vocals) and Konstantin Ryabinov (bass). Letov’s lyrics, noted for cryptic metaphors and surreal imagery, were at the same time openly political, harshly criticising Soviet government, which led to prosecutions by the KGB (in late 1985, Letov was forcibly hospitalized and put into a psychiatric ward). Coming from Omsk, GrOb is regarded as the key band of Siberian underground. Their sound was heavily influenced by Western punk and industrial music as well as Russian folk tunes; non-musical influences include Russian avantgarde literature, particularly the absurdist, Dada-like association OBERIU and the writer Andrei Platonov, whose grim parodies of Soviet reality predate Existentialism and Magic Realism. This song («Novaya Pravda», translated as «New Truth») is taken from the album «Армагеддон-Попс» (Armageddon-Pops, translated as «Armageddon Pop»), released in 1989.

New Truth
New Faith
This is the New Truth
This is the New Faith

Love thy lewdness
Love thy weakness
Love thy baseness
Love thy stench

This is the New Truth
This is the New Faith
This is the New Truth
This is the New Faith

Love thy envy
Love thy meanness
Love thy nothingness
Love thy vileness

This is the New Truth
This is the New Faith
This is the New Truth
This is the New Faith

Die of thirst
Die of fear
Die of force
Die of yourself

This is the New Truth
This is the New Faith
This is the New Truth
This is the New Faith

Through brains and callosities
Through obscure lumber-rooms
Through mornings and wagons
It approaches steadily —

This is the New Truth
This is the New Faith
This is the New Truth
This is the New Faith

Burning down inside a show window
A hysterical doll
An unloved child
Useless childhood reflected in stone tiles
Useless childhood buried in stone tiles
Who gives a fuck?
Who gives a shit?
Who gives a fuck?
Who gives a shit?

A panic laughter of greedy meat
A worthy result of seditious innocence
A lifelong laughter of burning meat
Weeping cold, and every result has

ITS OWN REASON
ITS OWN REASON

This is the New Truth
This is the New Faith
This is the New Truth
This is the New Faith

Love thy lewdness
Love thy weakness
Love thy meanness
Love thy stench

This is the New Truth
This is the New Faith
This is the New Truth
This is the New Faith
